Event Description

Ghashiram Kotwal is a musical play written in Marathi by Vijay Tendulkar which was first performed in 1972. The play is set in the 18th century in the city of Pune, Maharashtra. The story revolves around the character of Ghashiram, a cunning and manipulative man who rises to the position of a Kotwal, or chief of police, in Pune through his political mind and use of language, He uses his power to oppress the poor and favor the wealthy, where sometimes he even suppresses the wealthy, eventually leading to his downfall when he crosses all the limits of suppression. The play is a powerful commentary on the abuse of power and corruption in society. It is often seen as a critique of the political climate present at the time it was written. The play uses elements of satire and dark comedy to convey its message and is known for its music, colourful costumes, sharp dialogues, and well-drawn characters. "Ghashiram Kotwal" has been widely acclaimed for its artistic and literary merit, and is considered one of the most important works in Marathi literature. It has been adapted into several different forms and languages and into a film, a popular musical.
