Event Description

Heta’s talk brings us stories from her book Grinding Stories retold, which documents Oviyos sung by the Christain Gavda community in Goa, an art form which until now, was thought to be wiped out. With access to any musical instruments forbidden to these women, these songs, mostly monophonic, sung alone, while using the grinding stone as their instruments contain tales of their trials and tribulations, earthy wisdom with regard to societal dynamics, and unusual but heartwarming tales even amongst adversaries.

For those of you that have ever wondered if all that Goa has are it’s beaches and churches, this talk will bring to light the influences of the various other dynasties whose influences can still be seen, while exploring the rich, lesser-known folk art, crafts and culture that has outlived colonial influences and influencers for centuries.
