Event Description

The state of Karnataka is unique for being a region that has deep roots in Hindustani classical and Carnatic music. Before independence, North Karnataka was an integral part of the Bombay Presidency and parts of the Kingdom of Mysore were annexed to the Madras Presidency during British rule. First Edition Arts presents the past and present of these cultural exchanges in this series of concerts.  The programs will have guru/shishya pairings that bring forth repertoire, compositions and lesser-known composers from the state before a contemporary audience. These concerts seek to help inform audiences about the unique aspects of both Hindustani and Carnatic music as it is practiced in this region.

About the Artists

Poornima Kulkarni is a renowned Hindustani Classical vocalist from Karnataka. She is a disciple of the legendary vocalist of our country, Padmabhushan Pt. Basavraj Rajguru. She is one of the few leading female Hindustani classical vocalists with a wide-ranging repertoire that includes pure classical music, Hindi bhajans, Thumri, Kajri, Chaiti, Jhula, Marathi Abhangs, Bhavageet, Natya Sangeet, Kannada Bhajans and Vachanas. She founded Gandhara Sangeet Sabha in Bangalore in 2010, organising concerts of renowned artists and upcoming aspirants.

Smt. Vanishree Dhanvantri is a disciple of Vidushi Poornima Kulkarni. She received initial training from her parents, Smt. Padma and Shri. Shrinivas Sawai of Dharwad. She got a distinction in Visharada Poorna from Akhila Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Manda and is a graded artist of AIR Bangalore.  She has given many performances in Karnataka and Pune. She recently won the coveted International Swara Prabha Gayan Pratisthan classical music competition held by the Ganavardhan and Dr. Prabha Atre Foundation.
