Event Description

off/BEAT is a new kind of festival- a way to redefine the experience of arts and culture by taking them beyond traditional venues and into Bengaluru’s historic, heritage-rich spaces.

During these two weeks, we will illuminate the National Gallery of Modern Art, Panchavati, Sabha and more, and hold intimate dance, music and theatre performances with them as the backdrop. We invite you to join us in exploring and engaging with the city’s rich legacy in a fresh, immersive way.

About Guru Shishya

The state of Karnataka is unique for being a region that has had deep roots with both Hindustani classical as well as Carnatic music. Prior to independence, North Karnataka was an integral part of Bombay Presidency and parts of the Kingdom of Mysore were annexed to the Madras Presidency during British rule. First Edition Arts presents the past and present of these cultural exchanges in this series of concerts.

The programs will have guru/shishya pairings that bring forth repertoire, compositions and lesser known composers from the state before a contemporary audience. These concerts seek to help inform audiences about the unique aspects of both Hindustani and Carnatic music as it is practiced in this region.

About the Artists    R.N.Thyagarajan and Dr.R.N.Tharanathan, popularly known as the Rudrapatnam Brothers, were born in at Hassan in Karnataka State. They belong to a family of  musicians of repute, who have kept up their musical lineage for over three generations and also belong to Saint Thyagaraja Shishya parampara.

They began their concert career in 1956 and so far they have given innumerable concerts all over India and abroad to the accompaniment of highly acclaimed artists for over sixty five years.

Their music is deeply influenced by the great music maestros of yesteryears and displays clarity in the Raga delineation, purity of Shruti, stability in Gamakas, exquisite Bhava and a perfect rendition of Sahithya are the salient features of their music.
