Event Description

Evolved within the islands of Japan for several centuries, Haiku is one of the most popular forms of poetry today. However, writing haiku is a complex process. Being able to write good haikus can help you become better at other forms of poetry as well. During this workshop, participants will learn the art of conveying their feelings using concrete and objective images, free of judgment or analysis and juxtaposing them through cuts. Through a guided discussion, participants will also be encouraged to write their own haikus.

We will also look at the work of the three great Haiku masters: Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa, and learn a thing or two from their vision, craft, and life.

Sourav is a Hindi poet, translator and educator. He has worked as a faculty at Azim Premji University and NIFT Bengaluru, and taught poetry courses there. He has also conducted poetry workshops at various places including Bengaluru Poetry Festival, NID and IISc. He was the founding editor of Bengaluru Review magazine and currently works as an educator at Head Start Educational Academy. His published books include Kaal Baisakhi (Collection of poems), Karnakavita (Editor: Anthology of Hindi-Urdu poetry from Bengaluru), Soho Mein Marx (Translator: Three Plays by Howard Zinn), and Os Ki Prithvi (Translation of Japanese Haiku)
