Event Description

Continuing our Music Fundamentals Crash Course, we look forward to the iconic Bruce Lee Mani opening up the caverns of the harmonic universe through an in-depth walkthrough. All music students are welcome, including and especially vocalists, drummers, producers and musicians rooted in other styles.

Session 1: Harmony For Beginners

11 am - 2 pm

basic concepts of melody and harmony
scales and intervals
from chant to harmony: the systems that predate modern harmony
triads: from scales and intervals
cadences: perfect, imperfect, plagal, interrupted
beyond triads to 7th chords
'add' and 'sus' chords
chord families: harmonizing major and other scales
application to transcribing and making music: song analysis of 1 - 2 tracks.
exercises
harmonize a melody
work out a melody over a given set of chords

Session 2: Harmony for Adventurers

3 pm – 6 pm

overview of foundational concepts
colouring outside the lines: going beyond diatonic chords
song analysis of selected tracks
how the circle of fifths can help with borrowed chords
strategic consonance and dissonance
throwing away the rule book
exercises:
reharmonizing a popular song
writing a simple melody over exotic harmony

About the facilitator:

Bruce Lee Mani is a guitarist, singer, producer, composer and arranger, known best as the frontman for Thermal and a Quarter. With over 23 years of professional music experience, Bruce is also the director of Taaqademy, one of Bangalore's longest-running music schools.

These sessions are open to all levels of musicians.

Both session 1 and 2 can be taken consequently, as there will be only a small amount of overlap in the topics covered.
