How do we transform everyday objects into meaningful historical records?
History in Your Hands: Archiving for Everyone! is an interactive workshop that introduces participants to the principles of archiving, preservation, and curation. Turn clutter to collection, and make your records accessible for future generations.
From letters, emails and photographs to heirloom textiles and audio recordings, personal archives hold the stories of our lives… and our times. Participants will explore ways to make their collections available—whether through digital archives, family history projects, or community storytelling initiatives. We have designed hands-on exercises to appreciate the materiality of records to encourage attendees to develop an archival imagination about what gets remembered and how.
Led by historians and archivists from NLSIU, this session is open to all—whether you’re looking to organise family keepsakes, safeguard a community’s history, or simply learn the basics of archiving. By the end of the session, participants will have a clear roadmap to preserving their personal histories with care and intention.
Join us and discover how your everyday objects can become part of a lasting historical legacy!
Please Note: This workshop can only accommodate 20 participants.
This workshop is part of the Maps of Memory exhibition by the NLS Archives. The exhibition displays archival fragments and glimpses of personal memory to reconstruct joyful utopian worlds that feminists began building across South Asia in the mid-20th century. It invites us to reflect on key questions: How do we remember social movements? How do we archive friendships, solidarities, and resistance?
