Event Description

Ikat. Itihaas. Kahaani : Archival Ikats and contemporary interpretations by Aadyam Handwoven come together to explore the rich history, enduring relevance, and evolving language of this remarkable textile tradition. The showcase highlights the intricate craftsmanship, regional variations, and cultural narratives embedded within Ikat weaving, offering audiences a deeper understanding of its artistic and social significance. This is complemented by an engaging conversation on the ‘Art of Costuming for Films’ with Pia Benegal and Manish Saksena, who will share insights into the creative process of designing costumes that bring characters and stories to life on screen.

The evening continues with a screening of Susman (1987), a Hindi film by Shyam Benegal, which poignantly portrays the struggles of Ikat handloom weavers in Pochampally. Through its powerful storytelling, the film sheds light on the challenges faced by artisans, the impact of industrialization, and the resilience of traditional craft communities, making it a fitting conclusion to this immersive exploration of Ikat heritage.

Pia Benegal: Pia Benegal is a celebrated costume designer and partner at Shyam Benegal Sahyadri Films. Her extraordinary journey spans over three decades in the Indian film industry.
