Event Description

Sports Science has advanced the life of athletes, improved their performance, and successfully returned them from injury to sports. Dance forms, especially in the subcontinent are steeped in traditional methods of teaching, and traditional approaches to dance preparation; much of the science pertaining to dance and dance movement is left behind. The purpose of this workshop is as follows: We will make some assumptions for the purposes of this workshop.

Assumption 1: Dancers are athletes. Assumption 2: Dancers have ad-hoc training (dancers traditionally train prior to performance) Assumption 3: Dancers practice repetitively (repetitive movement practice can lead to overuse injuries, especially if movement recruitment is wrong) Assumption 4: Dancers' preparatory routine focuses more on stretching and flexibility rather than recruitment and engagement of muscles and soft tissues such as tendons & ligaments. Assumption 5: As dancers, we do not have a strong basis for strength development

This workshop will dive deep into how dancers can approach and integrate strength training into their practice and use it as an effective tool to prevent dancing injuries. It is a discussion plus movement session that will cover the following: What are injuries in dance? Is it different from injuries in sports, if so how? What is dance-specific strength and conditioning? How is dance-specific strength and conditioning different from regular strength and conditioning? Why is dance-specific strength and conditioning important?

Number of sessions: 2 Duration: 4 hours per session.
