“Ishtihaar” conceived and compiled by Deevas Gupta is a collection of short stories by Saadat Hasan Manto stitched together via poetry freshly written by Deevas himself. The whole experience of blunt narration of Manto and the satirical tone of poetry will not only teleport you to the times these stories were written in but will also make you realise how relevant these themes are even today. Ishtihaar attempts to bring different flavours of Manto and bring his favourite characters to life through the art of storytelling.
Saadat Hasan Manto was one of the greatest writers of the Indian subcontinent. An Indian soul trapped in Pakistan, Saadat Hasan Manto, fondly referred to as ‘Manto’, wrote more than 270 short stories, few movie scripts, plays, essays and articles before dying at an early age of forty two in Lahore, Pakistan. A short span of his writing career can be easily divided into two phases, the first one consisting of a wide range of experiences and the second, being a result of the impact of partition and his experiences thereof. The pure simplicity and straightforward flow of language and honest depiction of the incidents and experiences, makes him an exceptional Indian writer of Urdu language. However he is mostly remembered for the most controversial of his stories even though there were many more flavours in his stories which are very less often discussed.
