The Natanakairali Pavakathakali Ensemble is the only active performing group in the art form today, and this show is a testament to the hard work and dedication that has gone into reviving and preserving a rich part of our cultural heritage that otherwise would have been lost to the world forever.
About the Performance
Kalyana Soungandhikam- tells the story of Bheema's search for the rare flower kalyāṇasaugandhikam to please his wife Panchali. Pavakathakali is the name given to the traditional glove-puppet play of Kerala. The word pava means 'puppet' and Kathakali means "story-play'. When Kathakali, the famous classical dance-theatre of Kerala, came to Palghat, it naturally influenced the glove-puppet play which had already been in existence there. The Pavakathakali artistes began to dress their puppets in Kathakali costumes and also adopted the themes of the Attakatha-s (the compositions meant for Kathakali) for their puppet performances.
The History In 1981, serious work was undertaken to revive this dying art-form. Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, Former Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, entrusted to G. Venu the task of making a detailed study of the condition of Pavakathakali. G. Venu who had years of training in Kathakali and his understanding of Puppet theatre forms. Composed different plays in Pavakathakali and the art form is developed and protected by Natanakairali.
