Kavan - An Ambedkarite Opera is a biting operatic satire tracing the coming of age of Bejul, a young Ambedkarite boy haunted by the legacy of his Shahir father. Waking from a fever dream into chaos, Bejul finds his world crumbling: his once-devoted cow now spurns him, his mother is overwhelmed, and even his estranged sister turns him away. On the brink of despair, an unexpected opportunity emerges, one that could catapult him to power or destroy him entirely. Yalgaar was formed in 2015, inspired by Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision of cultural reform preceding political change. Rooted in progressive movements across Maharashtra, the group uses Ambedkari Shahiri Jalsa to address caste oppression in marginalized communities. Their plays blend storytelling, poetry, song, satire, and improvisation, drawing from Saint Tukaram, Janabai, Namdeo Dhasal, Babasaheb’s speeches, and the collective lived experiences of members. Active across Maharashtra and beyond, Yalgaar aim to empower marginalized voices, promote inclusivity, and inspire change through art and collaboration.

Nalanda Arts Studio is a Bangalore-based arts organization dedicated to research, scholarship, training, and practice in the performing and fine arts, with a particular focus on fostering collaborations among Asian, African, and Middle Eastern artists and communities.
