Event Description

As a part of 17th Anniversary of the Indian Cartoon Gallery, IIC is organising a retrospective exhibition and the presentation ceremony of the Bartons Lifetime Achievement Award to the eminent cartoonist Mr. Keshav Venkaraghavan on 6th July 2024.

The annual Award is instituted by Mr. Bharat Mehta, M.D. Bartons, the ‘Silvermasters’ since 1861 in Bengaluru. The first Bartons Award was presented to Mr. Ajit Ninan of The Times of India in 2022 and the second Bartons Award was presented to Mr. Jayanto Banerjee of The Hindustan Times in 2023.

Born in Bengaluru in 1961, Mr. Keshav went to Kendriya Vidyalaya, Golkonda, Hyderabad in 1977. He was graduated (B.Com) from Osmania University, Hyderabad in 1982 and M.Com from Madras University in 1984. Keshav began to draw from childhood. He explored art by observing the Indian Masters Ravi Varma, Nandalal Bose and contemporary Indian artists and European classic painters like Michelangelo, Raphael.

In 1982, he began sketching people live at music concerts, for Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil weekly. He was inspired by International Editorial cartoonists like David Low and others and Indian cartoonists like Shankar, Abu Abraham, O V Vijayan, R K Laxman, Gopulu, and Madhan.
