About Khutoot-e-Niswaan

Khutoot-e-Niswan presents a unique collaboration between Fouzia, India's first female Dastangoi artist, and modular synth artist Vaibhav, blending traditional storytelling with modern soundscapes. In this performance, Fouzia shares a rare collection of women’s letters from Old Delhi, rediscovered through her dedicated research. These letters, filled with intimate reflections, offer rare insights into the everyday lives and inner worlds of women from the past.  Reflecting on the inspiration behind *Khutoot-e-Niswan,* Fouzia explains her focus on the letters women penned—an often-overlooked aspect of historical storytelling. Her readings, laced with dialects and mannerisms of a bygone era, bring these forgotten voices to life, evoking nostalgia and a sense of connection to her ancestral roots.

Vaibhav’s live soundscape enhances the storytelling, intertwining electronic textures and samples to recreate the essence of daily life in Old Delhi. This innovative fusion of tradition and modernity received widespread acclaim at its 2023 debut in Delhi, as audiences experienced a heartfelt journey through history and memory.

About the Artist

Widely recognized and felicitated as "India's First Woman Dastangoi Artist", Fouzia is crafting narratives and captivating audiences for well over two decades. She has not only broken into the male bastion of storytelling, but is striving every single day to revive the 13th century dying art of oral Urdu storytelling, Dastangoi, in the country. She has performed over 500 shows, in India, and internationally.

One of the founding members of Dilli Improvisers Orchestra, India's first improv ensemble, Vaibhav Batra is an educator, composer, and live performer who employs modular synths and field recordings as tools of choice in his sound practice. With a keen ear for experimentation, he is known for eclectic collaborative live sets, including those with a turntablist, a sound coder, and a hip-hop collective
