Event Description

Pune based author, columnist and rasika, Gouri Dange, presents a guided listening session featuring some of the finest Hindustani women musicians down the ages in the BIC Library. Gouri will share glimpses of her own long and intense years of listening to Hindustani music as she grew up in a family and neighbourhood of listeners and music saadhaks in Chembur, Mumbai, Singapore and Pune and has also learnt the sitar. A brief introduction to the women musicians of the past with glimpses of their music curated by her will take listeners through a rasika’s personal and epic, serendipitous encounters with the Hindustani women musicians who gave themselves to the music. Following this, Bangalore based Agra Gharana vocalist Manasa Sastry presents a Hindustani Khayal concert as a tribute to the women musicians of the past. She will be joined by Sagar Bharatraj on tabla and Bharat Hegde on tabla. In collaboration with: Supported by: Artistes Gouri Dange Author & Editor Gouri Dange is the author of 9 books – three fiction, six non-fiction and one children’s book. She has long-running columns in national publications, on food, Indian music, parenting, people-watching and social satire. She is also a book editor, writer and family counsellor. Her long running columns and one-off pieces have appeared in The Hindu, Mint Lounge, Outlook, Mirror and other national publications. She grew up in a family and neighbourhood of listeners and music saadhaks in Chembur, Mumbai, Singapore and Pune. Later she had occasion to be closely associated with the musicologist Dr Ashok Ranade as an editor on some of his works, as a listener and close family friend. She learnt the sitar over several years and remains a keen listener drawing equal pleasure and sustenance from recordings of the old Masters as well as from the Live and contemporary Classical Music world. Manasa Sastry Hindustani Vocalist Manasa Shastry is a Bangalore-based Hindustani Classical Vocalist. She is a disciple of the renowned harmonium player and Agra gharana vocalist, Pandit Vyasmurti Katti. She has also trained under Vidushi Geetha Hegde in her earlier years. Manasa is a graduate of MSc Industrial Chemistry from MS Ramaiah College Bangalore, and more recently, she has completed her MA in Hindustani Vocal Music from Bharati Vidyapeeth in Pune, emerging as one of the top performers in the college. She has received many accolades for her sensitive and nuanced approach to the artform of vocal music, the foremost of which would be the coveted NCPA scholarship for young artistes, in the year 2020. She is also the recipient of the Pritibhakankshi Award for young vocalists, instituted by the Sri Ram Seva Mandali, Fort High School, Bangalore. She has performed at various music festivals and baithaks in Bangalore, Kochi, Udupi, Kollur, Hubli etc. In the year 2022, she was part of a select group of performers chosen by the ICCR to perform all over Germany, sponsored by the Government of India. Apart from being a vocalist, she is also a trained Kathak dancer. She learns Kathak from Vidushi Amartya Chatterjee Ghosh, a disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj. Manasa is also taking on the role of a teacher to mould capable students into promising musicians. Sagar Bharatraj Tabla Sagar is the son and disciple of Shri Bharathraj Venkat Rao from Calicut, Kerala, who is a senior disciple of Shri. Omkar Gulvady. After coming to Bangalore for his post graduation in chemical engineering, Sagar learnt under Shri Ravindra Yavagal for a short while and has also undergone vocal accompaniment training from Smt. Aditi Upadhya. Sagar is a research scientist with a chemical engineering background. A triple gold medallist BTech from NIT Calicut, MTech & PhD from IISc Bangalore, Sagar was also awarded the National Award for the best Mtech thesis in chemical engineering. He is currently a research scientist with numerous international patents and publications to his credit, in the renewable energy arena, working with Samsung Semiconductor India RnD, Bangalore. Bharat Hegde Harmonium Bharat Hegde received his early training in harmonium playing from Vidwan Shambu Bhat and Vidwan Shri Prakash Hegde in both accompaniment and solo techniques. His later training has been under Pt. Vasanth Kankapur and now he is learning under Pt. Sudheer Nayak from Mumbai. He has travelled widely in India accompanying classical as well as light classical vocalists. He has accompanied the likes of Pt Venkatesh Kumar, Pt Ganapathi Bhat, Pt Jayateerth Mevundi, Vidushi Sangeeta Katti, Vidushi Lalith J Rao, Vidush Purnima Bhat Kulkarni and received their blessings. He has given many solo concerts and won the hearts of many classical music lovers.
