Event Description

Born in Surat, Nisreen Moochhala completed her diploma in painting in 1957 and Mural painting in 1958 from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. Nisreen’s work is rooted in the cultural, social and personal surroundings around her. Textured layering, very fine detailing, and the colour palette combined with handcrafted paper sculptures give her work a very unique aesthetic. The work is in a box and contains a 3D view. She brings in her consummate drawing and painting skills and combines her deft work with wires and paper and cloth to build figurines and objects that form part of the work.

In this exhibition at ‘The Time and Space Gallery’, Lavelle Road, Bengaluru, she exhibits large and small works. This is the first time she is holding a show in this city.

Her work expresses the everyday life that we live in – people sitting in a park, going for a walk, street performers, boys selling flowers at street crossings, domestic quarrels, neighbours in small, boxed-in houses, the pulls and pushes of women as they balance the everyday life, woman and child sitting on a footpath, a boy and his kites, a building with rooms all joined together….She brings in her deep sensitivity to ordinary things and allows us an insight into their joys, troubles, angst, and celebrations.

Her mixed media works have been displayed in multiple solo shows and group shows across the country. The artist has been a recipient of many awards such as the Bombay Society Award in 1956, the Bombay State exhibition in 1956, and the Bombay state exhibition in 1957. She has received the distinguished senior artist award. She has earlier had shows in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Delhi.

She lives and works out of Pune.
