About Mahishasura Mardini
Mahalaya Amavasya marks the descent of Goddess Durga . According to tradition, on this night, Goddess Durga begins her descent from Mount Kailash to earth, preparing to vanquish the demon Mahishasura. It symbolizes the onset of Durga Puja and the arrival of divine feminine energy to protect, nurture, and restore balance. The celebrations begin with a powerful performance of Mahishasura Mardini in Yakshagana—a vibrant folk theatre that welcomes everyone to the celebration of good over evil.
