NINASAM Tirugata Play – Malatimadhava
Playwright: Bhavabhuti
Kannada Form and Direction: Akshara KV
Malati Madhava, written by the eminent 8th-century Sanskrit dramatist Bhavabhuti, is a captivating drama centred on the romantic entanglements of Malati and Madhava. Set against a backdrop of political intrigue and social upheaval, the play unfolds the trials and tribulations faced by its protagonists. Malati, a beautiful young woman, is in love with Madhava, a scholarly youth. Their love is tested by various obstacles, primarily originating from the political plotting of King Padmavati, who wishes to marry Malati off to his ally. In a dramatic turn, Madhava, disheartened by this betrayal, renounces the worldly life and retreats to a graveyard, where he lives as an ascetic or Sanyasi. Despite Madhava’s efforts to rescue Malati from being kidnapped by the Kapalikas for a sacrificial ritual, she is abducted again. However, their story finds a hopeful resolution when a compassionate Buddhist monk, Soudamini, intervenes and saves Malati. Eventually, the lovers are reunited. The play is renowned for its intricate plot, exploring themes of love, duty, and the complexities of social and political constraints. Through its spontaneous and dynamic narrative, Bhavabhuti presents a rich tapestry of human emotions and societal challenges.
