Archaeological Landscapes and Heritage Monuments: Contextualizing the Long-Term History of Maski

by Andrew Bauer 

Dr. Bauer will present research from 20 years of collaborative archaeological surveys and excavations in northern Karnataka, especially his recent work at Maski—famous for its Ashokan Edict but with a significantly earlier history.

He will also speak abour the spectacular megalithic site of Hire Benakal. Dr Bauer will focus on how archaeologists have made sense of these sites by contextualizing them within broader cultural landscapes of ancient activities and practices.

Dr Andrew Bauer is an anthropological archaeologist at Stanford University with an interest in South India's landscape history, cultural practices, and social inequalities from   the Neolithic to the Medieval periods. He also explores how landscape histories intersect with modern ideas of nature, conservation, and climate change
