EVENT HAS ENDED
Thimmaiah Rd, opposite UNI, Kaverappa Layout, Vasanth Nagar 560052
Medley is, as the name suggests, a medley, a pot pourri, an assorted box, an exhibition of the work of three radically different artists, Atoshi Shyam, K T Arun and Deepak Joshi. It is a medley of styles, colors, forms, personalities, media, emotions and expressions. Medley is a celebration of the variety in life and art.
The three artists are Atoshi Shyam, KT Arun (The Artist of Joy) and Deepak Joshi.
The themes are as disparate as the artists themselves. There are butterflies, dragonflies, lilies, gardens, dogs, people…. There are paintings in bright, vivid colour and pictures in stark black and white.
The artists
Atoshi Shyam
Atoshi Shyam is a self taught artist. She has been painting since 2002. Her journey in the world of art started at the age of 10 as a classical dancer and later a trained contemporary dancer. Her love for dance is only matched by her love for colours. Atoshi's paintings are spontaneous overflow of essentially humanistic concepts. Her vibrant play of colours on the canvas with intricate artwork is the visible groundwork of her style.
The Butterfly Series by Atoshi Shyam for the Medley exhibition
Butterflies serve as a metaphor of life in our chaotic world. It suggests that small events can have large effects in our lives. A butterfly symbolises a person's essence. It makes you believe in joy, liveliness and positivity. So simple, yet so complex and surreal. They are like faceless yet amazing people, some bold, some not, each wearing their own patterns, some showing their scars, others hiding them, some flying high, some on the ground, some half lived, some full…
KT Arun (The Artist of Joy)
KT Arun studied Chemistry, but was bitten by the art bug when he chanced upon ‘Letters to Theo’ – a book of letters written by Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo. Van Gogh’s passion for art ignited a similar passion in Arun. For the next two decades Arun worked in advertising (in global agencies like Ogilvy, Lowe and McCann Erickson). He created many popular campaigns until his love for art made him quit advertising and set up an art studio. Arun finds joy in simple things - birds winging homewards as the sun sets, clouds carrying our dreams in their fluffy forms, a cat licking itself clean, a dragonfly sipping water from a lake… He turns these simple things into colouful, joyous, exuberant poems and paintings. Hence the monicker – The Artist of Joy. His paintings are a burst of vivid, bold primary colours. Look beyond form, he says, see the joy in pure colour.
Arun’s themes for the Medley exhibition
The work Arun will display in the Medley Art Exhibition are based on philosophical meanderings of the mind during the lockdown. The joy that things gave him during this period, the experiences that touched him, the ups of life and the lows that he is once again giving wing to.
Deepak Joshi
Deepak Joshi has what you might call a chequered life. He has by turns worked as a mechanic, a helper in a biscuit factory, a clerk in a ration depot, a beach-side hawker, a waiter, a tuition teacher… at one time he even was a swami in the Himalayas. After that he settled down to a long and rewarding career in advertising. He worked as a Creative Director in agencies like McCann Erickson, Ogilvy, Saatchi & Saatchi, etc. He launched many brands like Hyundai Santro and Levi’s jeans in India, BPL Frost-free, Kelvinator microwave ovens etc. He has been dabbling in art since his college days. He prefers to work with ink and paper with often a hint of colour. His work is characterized by intricate, fine details.
Deepak Joshi’s themes for the Medley exhibition
The themes of the paintings/drawings that Joshi will display at the Medley exhibition are varied. There are lotuses – the flower that our gods seat themselves upon; lilies – the flowers that brighten up rooms and faces; people – bipolar Virginia Wolf and the brilliant Alfred Hitchcock; a version of Bruegel’s Tower of Babylon. In all, a medley of themes.
