Event Description

Meepao is a dance in celebration of all the departed, especially the ones who are deemed inconsequential. Using minimal movements, Meepao invites the spectator into a space where dancers and non-dancers alike can join in this celebration. It begins with simple movements of the feet. The movements repeat, as though creating its own ritual, and finds its depth and textures through the synchronicity of bodies dancing together to the beat of live music. They slowly transcend into a liminal space where the living (mee) convey a message (pao) of harmony. About the Artist- Surjit Nongmeikapam's Practice is an extraction from his own dream and creation from his imagination. His work is an extension of his different expressions as a healing process. Created from the unseen culture of his Manipuri roots, Surjit's artwork is brought to life without any fixed notation or choreography. His notation is not to be attached to one thought. It comes from "[his] heart”, “which move on [him]” and “closer to [him]”. He is also an award-winning (PECDA) choreographer for his pieces Nerves (2014) and Folktale (2016). He has been awarded the AMI ARTS FESTIVAL YOUTH AWARD FOR PERFORMING ART, in 2021. Nachom Arts Foundation is a platform for the new generation of dance and art lovers in Manipur. Focusing and specializing in contemporary dance and performing art forms, NAF mediates through alternative forms of art as channels that delve deep and beyond the imagery of movement. The performers are transdisciplinary artists of sound and movement, who have found their calling in collaborative journeys as immersive performance bodies.
