Introducing Keerthy Karthikeyan and Shalini Vijayagopalan, who will be presenting to you a margam. This margam is unique in that it will showcase not one but two traditional dance forms, Bharatnatyam and Mohiniyattom, and conclude with a jugalbandi performance showcasing both dance forms. Ganesha Stuti, Alarippu, Shabdam, Kriti Varnam Padam, and Thillana comprise the Margam sequence, which feature well-known traditional compositions. Padmabhooshan Sri Balasaraswati has likened the Margam to entering a great temple. When we approach a temple, we enter through the Gopuram (Alaripu) entrance, proceed through the Ardhamandapam (Jathiswaram), the Mandapa (Shabdham and Varnam), and ultimately arrive at the Srikovil (Padam/Keerthanam/Ashtapadhi), where the deity is housed and worshipped. As the Srikovil opens for the Deeparadhana, the chendamelam, or ghe drum beats, reaches the peak (Thillana) and then gradually fades away and ceases, accompanied by the final burning of the camphor (Mangalam). In conclusion the devotee takes to his heart the God he has so far glorified outside. And the dancer completes the traditional order by dancing to a simple devotional verse. This is an entirely spiritual interpretation of the Margam.
