Event Description

'Moving me, moving you' - Contact Improvisation workshop exploring the idea of deep kinaesthetic listening, weight sharing, and playful yet focused movement improvisation. “Just the pleasure of moving and using your body is, I think, maybe the main point. And the pleasure of dancing with somebody in an unplanned and spontaneous way, when you're free to invent and they're free to invent and you're neither one hampering the other - that's a very pleasant social form.” - Steve Paxton During this short workshop we shall explore basic concepts of Contact Improvisation allowing our movements to be spontaneous and allowing us to connect other bodies and our physical structure. We shall engage with individual and partner explorations to deepen understanding of such key concepts as rolling point of contact, impulse and directionality, and internal and external awareness. The workshop is open to both movers and non-movers.

For people aged 18 and above

About the facilitator: Asha Ponikiewska is a Bangalore-based artist working with movement improvisation, theatre, and visual arts. She initially trained in Bharatanatyam and Seraikella Chhau, however, dissatisfaction with the hermetic nature of these dance forms made her search for less structured ways of engaging with body and eventually led her towards engaging with contact improvisation, which she perceives to be not only a movement practice but also a metaphor for building interpersonal and interspecies relationships based on the premise of mutual support, trust, self-responsibility, spontaneity and fluidity of roles. Asha believes in empowerment through movement and focuses on rediscovering the body's intrinsic spontaneity. She would like her practice to be a reminder that as humans we need each other and that interconnectedness between self and the surrounding world lies at the core of human existence.
