Event Description

Session 1 Online:
 20 Sept 4:00 pm – 6:00
pm (₹ 1,000)

Tamso Ma Jyotir Gamaya... but how do you make sure you're in that
spotlight? And how to you make sure you look good in it? Classical
dancers have to adapt their art to the proscenium stage, and one of
the challenges is learning how to work with performance lighting.
This 2 hour masterclass will be led by Deepa, who has worked extensively with classical and contemporary dancers will
introduce you to the basic concepts of stage lighting, and how they
apply to your choices as a performer. It will give you the vocabulary
and understanding to communicate with lighting designers and stage
technicians, and give you a clearer understanding of the
possibilities and limitations of the magic of lights. It will help
you understand how to work both under the poorly funded, last-minute
conditions of jugaad that dancers are often forced to adapt to, as
well as how to not be afraid of the potential of technology in bigger
venues and on tours abroad. After this
session you should feel confidant about how to work with a lighting
designer, right from conceptualising to the nitty-gritties of
budgeting both time and money to get what you want.

Session 2 @ BIC, Bengaluru:
23 Sept 3 pm – 5 pm (₹ 2,000)

Aapo Deepo Bhava... but how do you make your choreography radiant?
This follow-up masterclass is for performers and choreographers who
wish to think more deeply about their relationship to lighting
design. It will be a more intimate session designed to be interactive
and participatory, so you can bring all your questions and doubts to
the table. We will be playing with a full rig of theatrical lighting on a
black dance floor, which is not an opportunity Indian performers often
get. The masterclass will be conducted by both Deepa and Niranjan, who will describe distinct and complimentary approaches to
lighting design. It will inspire you to consider light as
just much a creative partner in your dance as your music and aharya.

Deepa
D. studied lighting design at the University of Minnesota-Twin
Cities, while pursuing a BFA in Dance. She has been designing for
dance and theatre since 2007, first in the US and then in India, with
multiple national and international tours. She
was visiting faculty for lighting design at the Drama School, Mumbai.
Some of the choreographers she has worked with include: Amrita
Lahiri, Anita Ratnam, Daksha Sheth, Geeta Chandran,
Gilles Chuyen, Justin McCarthy, Lata Pada, Moya Michaels, Pratibha
Prahlad, Preeti Vasudevan, Ragini
Chandrashekhar, Rama Vaidyanathan, Sanjukta Wagh,
Sardono W. Kusumo, Shagun
Butani and Sonal Mansingh. She is also a performance
maker who incorporates lighting design into her script and
choreography from the start.

Niranjan
Gokhale received his BA and MA in Theatre from University of Pune
followed by an MFA in Lighting Design at the University of Georgia in
Athens, USA. He has collaborated with renowned
