Mrcchakatikam ('The Little Clay Cart') is one of Sanskrit literature’s most vibrant plays, alive with wit, romance, and drama. In this production, legendary Koodiyattam exponent and director G Venu brings Śūdraka's masterpiece to life via the world’s oldest surviving theatre tradition. The play follows Charudatta, a noble Brahmin merchant, and Vasantasena, a courtesan of beauty and heart, against a backdrop of gamblers, monks, thieves, and revolutionaries. The Natanakairali troupe present the work entirely within Koodiyattam’s classical grammar—its gestures, music, and rhythm.
