Event Description

Award-winning documentary Nasim, directed by Arne Büttner and Ole Jacobs will be screened next in our series German Cinema in Focus, curated by Shivani. Nasim is the winner of DEFA Sponsoring Award and the ver.di Award for Solidarity, Humanity and Fairness in 2021. For eight months, the film team led by Arne Büttner, and Ole Jacobs closely followed Nasim, a 38-year-old Afghan woman who lived in the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos along with her husband Shamsullah, their two sons, and extended family. This camp, at times, housed 20,000 people in a space meant for fewer than 3,000. Nasim struggles to cope with the harsh realities of camp life and is increasingly questioning her arranged marriage, which she was forced into at 13. Her sister encourages her to seek a new, independent life, but Nasim's own insecurities and fears hinder her progress. To remain in Europe, she and her husband must navigate the asylum process, despite her limited knowledge of his past. On the night of September 8-9, 2020, a major fire devastates the camp, leaving Nasim once again to face uncertainty and survival challenges. This documentary captures, with deep empathy, the daily life of this mother of two, who continually navigates the challenges of this extreme and untenable situation with remarkable resilience. Arne Büttner and Ole Jacobs are both freelance Directors of Photography (DOP) and directors from Germany, working since 2017. Büttner’s filmography includes works like “Lo que queda en el Camino” (2021), “La Espera” (2020), and “Beer! Beer!” (2020), which have been featured at international film festivals such as GIFF, DOK Leipzig, IFFR Rotterdam, and Palm Springs International Film Festival. Ole Jacobs studied Documentary Directing, and European Ethnology and History. His filmography includes “Alena” (2018), “Hamburger Gitter” (2017), and “Minsk Punks” (2017). Entry free! Age: 15+
