In this sumptuously illustrated lecture, Stephen Huyler takes us through his practice. Using selected exhibitions, films, and books he will talk about the ways in which he has innovatively reframed – and pushed audiences to reconsider – the cultural heritage and creative practices of India. This presentation at MAP heralds the release of ‘Transformed By India,’ his memoir that records many of his experiences during 52 years of annual travel on roads far from India’s beaten paths. For half a century, Dr. Huyler has been conducting field research in India, attempting to document otherwise little-noticed visual cultures. As a noted photographer, author, and curator, he has organized dozens of exhibitions at major museums across the world, including in India, and has published seven books and many other chapters and articles. Huyler’s work attempts to stretch the limits of understanding, challenging individuals to reframe their ideas and notions of South Asia.
