Nrityakosh, a renowned oriental and fusion belly dance school, is thrilled to announce its upcoming dance production, 'Arabian Nights.' Nrityakosh’s production offers a mesmerizing dance retelling of the legendary 1001 Nights, with a unique focus on the powerful women within these cherished tales. The event will be held on Saturday, 14th October 2023, at 4 pm & 7 PM at the JSS Auditorium in Jayanagar, Bengaluru.
With an ensemble of over 80 oriental dancers, this production will offer a theatrical experience, blending artistry, culture, and storytelling. The Arabian Nights, a collection of tales narrated by Scheherazade over 1001 Nights to the formidable Sultan Shahryar, have left an indelible mark on both Eastern and Western literary traditions. The well-loved stories of Aladdin & the Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and Sindbad the Sailor have captivated audiences for generations.
Nrityakosh, in its rendition of these timeless narratives, shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked women of these stories, offering fresh perspectives and imaginative twists. With a focus on women characters such as Jasmine (aka Badr al Badour), Morgiana, and a gender-bent Sinbad, the production explores how their stories impact the relationship between Shahryar and Scheherazade. This 120-minute performance promises to be an imaginative journey into a world of all-powerful djinns, enchanting princesses, crafty slave girls, and adventurous sailors.
'Arabian Nights' is conceptualized and choreographed by Debapriya Das, marking the first performance of its kind in Bengaluru within the realm of Belly Dance. Over the years, Debapriya and her dance institute 'Nrityakosh' have curated and produced socially, culturally, and politically relevant shows that seamlessly blend storytelling with Oriental Dance. Nrityakosh fosters inclusivity by offering belly dancing classes for individuals of all ages and genders, creating a space for learning and growth. Moreover, it actively promotes belly dancing as a viable professional career by introducing diverse avenues within the field.
Debapriya, who has a rich background in various dance styles such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Ballet, Flamenco, and contemporary dance, fell in love with Belly Dance in 2012. She has since dedicated herself to mastering the art form, training with the best artists in the field and expanding her expertise in Middle Eastern dance vocabulary, both folk and classical, as well as its fusion formats.
Arabian Nights is a fundraiser. Nrityakosh is collaborating with Rotary Bangalore South Parade (RBSP) to raise funds for a noble cause.
