Event Description

A musical trip to the hills around the river Teesta In collaboration with Maraa, our long term cultural partner, we are happy to present to you a concert featuring Gauley Bhai and the Teesta Troupers as part of the October Jam 2023.

October Jam is the annual arts festival organised by Maraa. Each year, the festival is organised around a binding theme, idea, or provocation. The spirit behind the festival is to ensure a space for the arts, that is free from competing agendas of the market/state, and in particular to feature artists whose voices are systematically censored/suppressed.

This year, the festival is called Lightning/ ಮಿಂಚು/बिजली and will feature artists from various geographies, social locations and in various languages, across comedy, music, theater, cinema and performance.

Gauley Bhai ("the boy from back home/of the neighbourhood" in Nepali, lit. "younger brother from the village") is a Nepali Folk Rock band, based in Bangalore and Kalimpong. In 2017, a group of friends met in a jam room in Bangalore - Siddhant, Veecheet and Anudwatt from Kalimpong (Gorkhaland - Nepali-speaking north-east India) & Joe from Calicut (Kerala). They began creating music that reflected their journeys of migration. The music drew from the sounds of their childhood, growing up in small towns, and the fractures of life in the city.

Teesta Troupers: In 2022 Gauley Bhai returned to Teesta to set up a space for young musicians in the region to collaborate, jam and make music. A room below a mechanics shop was transformed into a jam room, and the Teesta Troupers were born, a collective of rappers, songwriters and musicians. Teesta Troupers are a collective of musicians, rappers and songwriters. Their music draws from their experience of growing up along the highway and reflects the hope, hustle and melancholy of life in the Teesta valley. Featuring Asis aka Sound of the Streets, Anil Aka Mr. Anix, Manoj Aka MJ Humble and Sudeep Aka Dj Sudp. The Troupers collaborated to produce an album featuring songs that induce the melancholy, hustle and everyday life of living and working along the Teesta highway. This evening will be about songs, stories and music from the hills and valley around the Teesta.
