About the performance:
This is a Quartet ensemble that brings to you an evolution of sound through songs & anecdotes from India’s songbook.
From the crackle of Gramophones to the unwinding of cassette culture, Indian music has witnessed many artists who broke the mould.
Team Off the Records will present musical stories rich with the melody of history that shaped how we listened and lived. Interwoven with trivia and anecdotes amidst the landscape of a vintage broadcast, Off the Records reimagines the golden decades of live sound on stage.
About the artists:
Gurupriya Atreya
Gurupriya Atreya is a singer, composer and an arts curator. Trained in Indian classical music since childhood, she is currently a disciple of Ustad Faiyaz Khan. Staying rooted in the classical and semi-classical music traditions, she actively performs songs from the Bhakti and Sufi traditions, ghazals, lends her voice for singing playback for films, commercial jingles and voice overs.
As a composer, educator and facilitator, Gurupriya has worked with various dance companies, schools and productions.
Her recent debut as a music composer for a Kannada short film titled “Rasam” has been recognised in many film festivals for “Best Original Score”.
Through her projects such as The Living Room Kutcheri, Sing a lullaby, as a facilitator of arts for children and other vulnerable population, she dreams of making a difference by bringing large groups of people, communities and cultures together, to form an inclusive society at large.
Sumith S. Naik
Sumith hails from Kochi, Kerala. He was initiated into music by his parents, Shri Sudhakar Naik and Smt. Meera. He began his initial musical training under Vidwan Naveen Pai and then continued under the tutelage of Dr. Udayraj Karpur. The blessings and guidance of his Gurus have shaped him into a skillful and accomplished Tabla player. His Tabla accompaniment is evocative, engaging, and complementary. He has accompanied many renowned senior musicians and promising young artists of India. Sumith has performed numerous Tabla solo concerts, Carnatic 'Talavadya' percussion ensembles, and solo accompaniment with his Guru, Dr. Udayraj Karpur.
An adept player, Sumith also plays for various other genres such as Ghazals, Jazz, Bhakti Sangeet, Natya Sangeet, and Sufi music. He has contributed to background scores for many movie tracks, including 'Mohavalayam' and 'Sthalam.' He has delivered outstanding performances at highly esteemed platforms in India as well as overseas in countries such as the UK, Switzerland, and France. In 2017, he was awarded the G.S.B. Award and conferred the title 'Laya Pratibha.
Sandeep Pillai
Sandeep Pillai, a graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID), is a seasoned Product & User Experience Designer with over 20 years in corporate innovation. However, his heart has always been in music and sound design, a passion nurtured by his father. After years of balancing both worlds, Sandeep left corporate life to fully embrace his journey through music, entrepreneurship, and a deep connection to nature.
As a composer and performer, he has worked with iconic figures like Mrinalini and Mallika Sarabhai, and his compositions have received acclaim in theatre, films, and multimedia productions. His band, Soulë, blends Indian classical fusion, while his solo project, Eklavya, explores music's power to unify through just 12 notes, embodying his belief in learning from the world around us.
Sandeep also runs NammaKadu Estates, a homestay in South Coorg, offering a retreat for family, friends, and creatives.
Rishab Nair
Rishab is a music composer, music producer, and singer-songwriter. A graduate of A.R. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, his work blends deep-rooted musicality, original writing and personal reflections with contemporary soundscapes.
His debut album, “If not for you” was featured on Rollingstone India and featured many international collaborations.
He is one of only two artists selected nationwide for the prestigious Arpo Earthlore Fellowship, supported by Tata Trust, through which he currently collaborates with folk and tribal musicians from Wayanad and Coorg celebrating India’s rich musical heritage.
