‘ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ನಂಬಬೇಡ. ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸು!’. ಈ ಮನೋಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ನಮ್ಮದು. ಆದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುವ ಮನೋಭಾವ ಉಳಿದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯೂ, ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯೂ ಹೋಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ವಿರೋಧಿಸುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಾಗಿ ಮಾರ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ಕಥೆಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ಮನರಂಜನೆಗಾಗಿ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ. ಕಥೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಆಂತರೀಕರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸಿದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ನಮ್ಮದು. ಜನನವೆಂದರೇನು? ಜನಿಸಿದ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಜೀವಕ್ಕೂ ಮರಣ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವೇಕೆ? ಮರಣಾನಂತರ ಏನಾಗುತ್ತದೆ? ಅಂತಿಮ ನಾಶವೇ? ಅಥವಾ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಪಯಣದ ಆರಂಭವೇ? ಈ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಅನಾದಿ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಇವೆ, ಮಾನವನನ್ನು ಕಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂದೆಯೂ ಕಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದೋ ಉತ್ತರ ಹುಡುಕಬೇಕು ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನೇ ಮರೆತುಬಿಡಬೇಕು. ಫೇಸ್‌ಬುಕ್ ಇನ್‌ಸ್ಟಾಗ್ರಾಂ ಪೀಡೆಯ ಈ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು-ನಾಲ್ಕರಷ್ಟು ಜನ ಇದನ್ನು ಮರೆತೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕವಿ ಕಾಳಿದಾಸ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ – “ಹಳೆಯದು ಎಂದು ಅಥವಾ ಹೊಸತು ಎಂದು ಯಾವುದನ್ನೂ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಬಾರದು”. ವಿವೇಕಿಯು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡದೆ ಯಾವುದನ್ನೂ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುವುದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮೂರ್ಖರು ಮಾತ್ರ ಇತರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮದಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಆಧಾರರಹಿತ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ತೀರ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಇದು ಮುಕ್ತಿಯ ಕಥೆ. ಮರಣದ ಕಥೆ. ಮರುಜನ್ಮದ ಕಥೆ. ದ್ವಂದ್ವದ ಕಥೆ. ಸಂಕಷ್ಟದ ಕಥೆ. ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತಾಪದ ಕಥೆ. ಕತ್ತಲು ಸಾಯುವಾಗ ಬೆಳಕು ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ, ಜ್ಞಾನ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಿಸುವಾಗ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೋರಾಟದ ತುಡಿತ ಅನಿಸಿದೊಡನೆ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟಗಳ ಫಲ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಹಂ ಸಾಯುವಾಗಲೇ ಆತ್ಮಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ಕಾರ.

ಈ ನಾಟಕವು ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ಮನಃಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಅನ್ವೇಷಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಸತ್ಯಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವಾಗಿವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಚಿಂತಿಸುವ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಸತ್ಯ ಒಂದೇ ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ರೀತಿ ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಂವಾದದ ಧಾಟಿ ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆ. ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುವ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೋಧಿಸುವ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ. “ಒಂದು ವಿಲಯ ಕಥೆ” ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಲಯಬದ್ಧ ಜಡತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಹಳೆಯ ಬೇರಿನಿಂದ ಹೊಸ ಚಿಗುರು ಮೊಳೆಯುವ ಕಥೆ.

“Question everything. Never accept blindly.” This principle has been the cornerstone of our culture since time immemorial. Yet today, while the questioning spirit endures, we have lost both our interest in seeking answers and our patience in understanding them. Questioning and defying everything has merely become a badge of pride.

In our culture, stories have always been more than mere entertainment. They have served as vessels through which we learn to internalize emotions and understanding. What is birth? Why is death inevitable for all living beings? What lies beyond death—is it final extinction or the beginning of another journey? These eternal questions have haunted humanity since its inception and will continue to do so. We must either find answers or learn to live with these questions. In this age of social media distractions, three-quarters of humanity has forgotten to even ask them.

As Kalidasa says, “Nothing should be rejected merely for being old or new.” A wise person neither accepts nor rejects without thorough examination. Only fools adopt others’ opinions unquestioningly and pass unfounded judgments.

This is a story of liberation. A tale of death and rebirth. A narrative of dilemmas and difficulties. A journey through repentance. When darkness perishes, light emerges; when knowledge dawns, ignorance recedes. The moment one feels the urge to persevere, the fruits of hardship begin to appear. Self-realization emerges only when the ego dissolves.

The play explores our contemporary mindset while contemplating how timeless truths remain relevant today. While truth remains constant, the methods of conveying it have evolved. The tone of discourse has shifted. There is a need to educate in a language that resonates with today’s learners. “Ondu Vilaya Kathe” is a tale of rhythmic continuity, where new shoots sprout from ancient roots.
