beej presents ORANGE BUTTERFLIES AND AQUA SEQUINS - a quilt of women's poetry in theatre, music and dance.
Weaving a colourful tapestry of women's voices across time, cultures and languages, the evening will string together diverse poems from Bhaddhakundalkesi to Kobita Sinha, from Ntozake Shange to Bahinabai Chowdhari, from Joy Harjo to Arundhathi Subramaniam. Poems that tease and prod, poems that churn and swirl, poems that occupy space and celebrate. dreams and desires, faith and faithlessness.
About the artiste: Performer, choreographer, teacher and curator, Sanjukta Wagh is the founder of an interdisciplinary initiative called beej in Mumbai which is engaged in exploring the creative process and improvisation, alternative methods of classical dance pedagogy and collaborative performance.
Sanjukta has developed a unique language of dance theatre that uses the language of Kathak as the base and draws from her experience of contemporary dance, theatre and Hindustani music to create structures for improvisation and flow where the wildness of the performing body can be allowed to blossom and be witnessed. Her work is greatly inspired by literature across languages and especially the Bhakti poets.
