Pagol-Para (Madly Passionate) is an intense play written by Ujjwal Chattopadhyay, based on two short stories of Bibhutibhusan Bandyapadhyay. A frail rustic man, Harihar Kundu, hardly living on meager income as an account bookkeeper with a Handloom Cloth Merchant, considers himself a writer and is madly passionate about his writing with the blind belief of fame and popularity one day. But in reality his writings are very much absurd and poor in both structure and theme filled with crude emotions. Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay, the famous writer, and an important character of this play, unfolds this mysterious man, eventually becoming an acquaintance of him that matures to unusual bonding. Harihar Kundu utters his writing alone to the river at odd hours of the night, has no interest about writings of famous litterateurs and literatures, he rather dishonors them openly. But who is he! Is he a true unsuccessful talent or an arrogant asocial village clown who points out faults even in Rabindranath Tagore's rhythm and language! 'An author is the only and only refuge of another author!’, this utterance of poor Harihar turns into reality when Bibhutibhusan himself stands beside the deathbed of the ardent dreamer, dreamt to be a writer with difference! What realization unfolds to Bibhutibhusan after his death! And, the uncanny realism obviously will lead the audience to feel ‘magic realism’ in the play “Pagol Para”. Authors are madly passionate.... authors are 'Pagol-para'……. all authors are somehow, sometime or at some moment are mad! ....Let's rediscover the truth watching the drama.
