Event Description

6 pm | Sonaksha Pop Up – Postcards, Prints and Books 6:30 pm | Paints, Pillows and Pain | Talk When Sonaksha returned to art after years of hiding their paint and pencils, they had some new diagnoses, chronic pain, and barely even believed they were real. Everything constantly felt like a bad dream – one they couldn’t exit. They began befriending their art supplies as a way to remember to breathe between panic attacks. But slowly, sitting and making art not only became a way for them to make space to hold what came up inside them, but also opened doors to have conversations with others. Over the years their art practice has expanded personally and professionally, but continues to be grounded in exploring ways of using art making to process and document their experiences of mental health, queerness, and gender among other things. Through the talk, Sonaksha will share the ways they’ve been able to navigate depression, anxiety, depersonalisation and fibromyalgia flare ups through illustrating, painting and drawing – while using their bed as the headquarters. They’ll also take us through their learnings from the disability justice movement, their crip queer families and their work across social justice movements. The talk will be followed by a space for questions and reflections. Attendees for this session are requested to wear a mask.
