Event Description

About Palti:

'Palti’ (Meaning : Somersault) is a play that deals with grandparents, grandchildren and grief. A Kannada adaptation of Mike Kenny's "Walking on a tight rope," the play makes space to hold grief lightly and meaningfully. The models of grief in Psychology often cater to adults. The process, the stages, the expressions - all of it. Moreover, adults often refrain from speaking to children about death and grief, due to understanding the ever present themes as taboo or inauspicious. All of these factors create a gap between the lived reality of a curious child and the world around them- of which loss is an inseparable part.

Research on bereaved children worldwide has validated that children can sense the death of a loved one and experience grief but don't have enough spaces to express it. With this play and the support of an expressive arts therapist post the play, we hope to co-create conversations about gentle ways to hold grief - not just for children but also for adults. Through metaphor, repetition, easy language, prose and poetry, we aim to navigate the tricky, sticky world of grief!

The play runs for 60 minutes followed by an interactive discussion with children and adults that will involve conversations and activities around grief to wind down after the play.

About the jijji collective:

jijji collective (jijji - kannada word used for water) is a Bangalore based theatre company and was founded in 2020. It works at the intersections of Kannada and English Theatre and Playback (an improvised format) and Proscenium Theatre. Creating accessible art, paving way for free conversations through art and platforming agential learning spaces (through workshops and language classes) are some of the main guiding principles of jijji. In the past few years, jijji has worked with themes of queerness, feminism and absurdism.
