Event Description

The book The Politics of Modern Indian Language Literature examines various works of literature, focusing on prose narrative forms such as novels, short stories, memoirs and plays. It deals with works by 25 different writers in 14 languages including those from the religious minorities, marginalised sections and ethnic groups such as those from Kashmir and Manipur, and also women writers from across India. The thrust of the book is primarily the politics of the writing and the common concerns that surface in the selected works. Since so many languages are covered, the works are studied in English language translation and important are primarily the concerns and attitudes of the writers as they are revealed in the translated works. The book tries to look beyond the expressed concerns of each writer at covert significations if any. The discussion is expected to shed light on issues pertaining to Indian language literature after 1947, since this is the first book on the subject to scrutinize it in this way. The author MK Raghavendra will be in conversation with Chiranjiv Singh, IAS and N Vidyashankar Jois, both of whom have been highly active culturally in Bengaluru. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session. Speakers MK Raghavendra Author MK Raghavendra is a writer on culture, literature and politics, specializing in film, particularly its political side. After getting a master’s degree in science and working in the financial sector for over two decades, he has become a full-time writer. He won the National Award, The Swarna Kamal for Best Film Critic in 1997, and received a Homi Bhabha Fellowship in 2000-2001. Since then, he has authored five volumes of academic film scholarship from international publishers like Oxford University Press, Routledge, Bloomsbury and HarperCollins. His academic writing has been anthologized internationally, for publishers like Sage, British film Institute, Routledge, Oxford University Press, and he has written journalistic pieces for Deccan Herald, The Hindu, The Indian Express, Hindustan Times and Times of India. Chiranjiv Singh Former Ambassador of India to UNESCO Chiranjiv Singh is a former Ambassador of India to UNESCO in Paris. An Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1969 batch, he retired in 2005 as the Development Commissioner of Karnataka and Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka. After his retirement he has been associated with numerous non-governmental organisations working in the fields of rural development, environment and culture. He was awarded the Rajyotsava Award in 2005 by the Government of Karnataka for his achievements. N Vidyashankar Jois Founder member & Artistic Director of BIFFes Vidyashankar has been active in the fields of literature and cinema. He is a founder member and Artistic Director of Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes) and has been writing and lecturing on cinema for over 3 decades. He was associated with management of a literary Journal Rujuvathu in Kannada for over 8 years under the editorship of Dr. U. R. Ananthamurthy and was the editor of a quarterly film magazine for a film society. He has compiled a book on European film theories edited by Dr. Girish Kasaravalli, edited a book on African Cinema and recently published a compendium of articles on film art & culture, all in Kannada. He is a Member of FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) and of NETPAC (Network for promotion of Asian & Pacific Cinema). He has served for 5 years as a member of the Advisory Panel of Central Board of Film Certification. He is a former President/Secretary of Suchitra Film Society, Bengaluru a pioneering film society in India established in 1971. He has been a member of the critic’s jury at important international film festivals at Cannes, Busan (Korea), Quezon city (Philippines), Aurangabad, Trivandrum, Lucknow, Golden Arch awards (Russia) and a delegate to major Film Festivals at Berlin, Venice, St. Petersburg, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati, etc.,
