To mark the 100th birthday celebrations of the legendary cartoonist Sri S. D. Phadnis, the Indian Institute of Cartoonists is organising ‘PHADNIS GALLERY’, an exhibition of his colourful cartoons on 6th September 2025.
Sri. Shivaram Dattatreya Phadnis, born in Bhoj, Belgaum district, in 1925, received a Diploma in Commercial Art from the J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai, in 1949. His hobby of drawing cartoons evolved into a career, and his captionless, coloured cartoons in magazines became a new trend in Cover Design. He was felicitated by IIC with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. ‘Chitrahas’, his audio-visual programme with talk, demonstration and slide-show on the art of cartooning was a great hit in many cities, including the US and the UK in 1997. Some of his cartoons have been exhibited and published in the International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal and Germany. Two TV programmes on the ‘Art of Cartooning’ were presented in the national telecast of the UGC education programme in 1987.
