If Vasco Da Gama or Hiuen Tsang had a film camera, what would their India travels look like?

Phantom India is one travelogue that would have probably been part of their oeuvre.

Across 7 episodes in this limited series, Louis Malle undertakes what he calls an "anthropological journey through lost time".

Rather than constructing a linear argument about India, Malle assembles a mosaic of encounters. Markets, villages, temples, factories, rituals and everyday conversations unfold without explanatory narration or dramatic orchestration. The result is a patient observational cinema that invites viewers to discover rhythms and relationships for themselves, resisting the temptation to simplify an impossibly complex civilization.

What makes Phantom India enduringly compelling is its refusal to romanticize or condemn. Malle's camera lingers with equal curiosity on splendour and deprivation, faith and labour, continuity and change. It is neither a tourist's spectacle nor a political tract, but an attempt to understand a society through close attention to its people, gestures and lived realities, allowing contradiction itself to become the film's central subject.

Filmed across India in 1968-69, this video essay series is, in the French New Wave director's own words, his most deeply personal work.

Banned in India during its time for its brutal honesty, Phantom India offers viewers a rare, dispassionate encounter with civilizational existence as manifested in the contradictions of Indian life.
