Welcome to Pint of View – Bangalore's first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in pubs and bars.
For centuries, Saturn was nothing more than a silent, ringed enigma viewed through the glass of distant telescopes, or as closer blurry views from passing spacecraft. That changed in 2004 when the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft arrived, turning a point of light into a vibrant world of methane seas, electric storms, and erupting ice towers.
In this presentation, Nimisha Mittal takes you behind the scenes of one of NASA’s most ambitious odysseys. We begin with the historical quest to understand the "Jewel of the Solar System”, the discoveries, the science, the new mysteries, and the true heart of the mission- what it was like being in the trenches of operating the spacecraft. Discover why we went, what we found, and how a lone robot’s sacrifice changed our search for life forever.
About the speaker
Nimisha Mittal spent over 15 years as a space systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (though she'll be the first to tell you that operating a Mars rover is somehow less mystifying than getting an Indian driving license).
She has run testing and operations for three of NASA's five Mars rovers, the Cassini mission at Saturn, the InSight Mars lander, and most recently the NISAR mission, a joint effort between NASA and ISRO. She holds engineering degrees from UT Austin and Stanford, which mostly taught her that the hardest problems in the universe can't be solved solely with fancy degrees. She now leads programs and operations for a new generation of hyperspectral satellites at Pixxel, a Bengaluru-based space startup, this time focused on understanding Earth instead of escaping it.
