Event Description

Each one of us has our own insight into what constitutes good poetry. While we accept that creative expression is spontaneous, we also believe that poetry writing is a skill which can be acquired with learning and bettered with practice. To be able to achieve this, we will approach poetry through different perspectives: of sound, rhythm, imagery, among others.

During the workshop, we will together explore poetry written by the most celebrated poets of past and present, and inspect their craft. We will also get our hands dirty, attempting newer poems during the course of the workshop.

The workshop will broadly cover -

1. Basics of poetry writing – the power of words, self-expression, being original, recounting and dwelling on one’s own past experience

2. Tools of poetry - rhythm and sound, imagery, metaphor, and symbols. Rhetoric, personification, simile, figures of speech.

3. Reading of popular works of poetry from India and across the world

4. Exercise to encourage participants to apply the concepts learnt and explore their own skills at writing and expression.
