Event Description

Prakriti Excellence in Contemporary Dance Awards (PECDA), is a biennial pan-Indian open-entry competition of works in progress for contemporary choreographers and dancers. It was founded with a vision to nurture a community of contemporary dancers and recognize excellence in the field of contemporary dance. PECDA, for contemporary dance artists, is a launchpad for their future development and ultimately aiming to develop the contemporary dance community in the country.

PECDA has been blueprinted in 2012 by dance enabler Karthika Nair (poet, producer and co-founder of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s company Eastman).

Since the last edition of PECDA, we are taking a new direction and making PECDA a community initiative for all the contemporary dancers and choreographers in India. Besides the competition, we have also added mentorship for all the shortlisted participants. We will also be showcasing many finished new works to visiting presenters.

This PECDA edition V, we are taking it a step further and adding workshops, panel discussions, dance films and presentation of writings on dance.

The Artistic Directors of edition V are Farooq Choudhury OBE (Producer of Akram Khan Dance Company & TATE Trustee in the UK) and Chandrika Grover Ralleigh (Independent Arts Consultant – India). Kylie Walters (Director of choreographic studies at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon, France) is the festival mentor for this edition, who would be mentoring all the 18 shortlisted pre finalists.

The Jury comprises Rachid Ouramdane (President- Director – Chaillot Theatre National De La Danse, France), Anmol Vellani (Artist, Researcher and Founder, India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore, India), Melanie Zimmerman (Programmer/Dramaturge at Kampnagel, Germany), Glyn Roberts (Director of Castlemaine State Festival, Australia) and Mark Yeoman (Artistic Director of Noorderzon- Festival of Performing Arts & Society, Netherlands).
