For our Non-Bengali friends: Rabindranath Tagore, a revered poet, writer, painter, author of our National Anthem, was a global citizen who believed that one could promote one’s own culture while appreciating the culture of others. He did not see any contradiction between respect for universal values, while maintaining one’s own. He was also known as “Gurudev” or “Kaviguru”. Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 and became Asia’s first Nobel laureate in the field of literature. In 2017, we will be celebrating Tagore’s 156th birth anniversary.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet and musician. He was also known as ‘Bidrohi Kobi’ (rebel poet) for his works espousing resistance against all kinds of oppression. He influenced the literary world with his poetry, music, philosophies and revolutionary views. His vision for both India and Bangladesh increased his popularity in both countries, being named the National Poet of Bangladesh and being remembered and honored fondly in India.
