Event Description

RS Connect in collaboration with Heritage Beku is back this Sunday with a unique session on restoration of vintage cars, not just from an engineering perspective, but an emotional one too. TR Raghunandan, a car enthusiast, has spent decades restoring and re-modelling a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster, which used to belong to Svetoslav Roerich and Devika Rani, among many others.

Only a fraction of old vehicles remain in India, to tell the story of our transport history. Each car discovered, each rust bucket and basket case restored, is a capsule of history; they speak of not only their past owners, but also of the times in which they lived.

What does it mean for a restorer, to put a car back on its wheels, to bring it back to life?

For Raghunandan, restoration of old vehicles is a fascinating, addictive and all-consuming hobby. It brings with it many emotions; the joy of discovery, the impatience to get everything moving, the patience in taking a car apart bit by bit, the frustration of dealing with missing parts, the ‘wow’ moment when one discovers something significant about the previous owners, the tears of happiness when a long silent engine springs to life, and the quiet satisfaction of a job well done, when everything is done and dusted.

At this session, Raghunandan will share about one of his restorations, and reflect on the thrills and spills of restoration and how it bonds people across the world.

This is the first of many sessions in collaboration with Heritage Beku, a citizen initiative to maintain and preserve Bengaluru's fading heritage. Their focus is to have an agile, dynamic, evolving framework to reflect citizen voices & channel it to positively impact preservation of the city's heritage - be it built, natural or cultural.
