After performing to packed houses in February at Ranga Shankara, the Kottichetham Kutiyattam Ensemble's 'Vikramorvasheeyam' goes online with Ranga Shankara's 'Staged@RS' programme. This will be the fifth play under Ranga Shankara's 'Staged@RS' digital streaming programme, supported by the Infosys Foundation.
'Vikramorvasheeyam' is a presentation of Kalidasa’s timeless Sanksrit play in Kutiyattam. Over 2000 years old, Kutiyattam is one of India's oldest theatrical art forms that are still in practice today. Originating in Kerala, Kutiyattam seamlessly blends Sanskrit classicism and the local traditions of Kerala. 'Vikramorvasheeyam' is directed by renowned Kutiyattam practitioner Guru G Venu and features Kapila Venu, Sooraj Nambiar, and Ammanur Rajaneesh Chakyar.
The piece is the story of the powerful love between King Pururavas and the Apsara Urvashi. This interpretation has only the Sutradhara, Pururavas, and Urvasi. It is a depiction of Urvasi's kidnap by the demon Kesi, and her rescue by King Pururavas.
The performance is for audiences 8 years and above. 'Vikramorvasheeyam' premieres on Fri, 23 Apr 2021 and is available for viewing till 11:59 PM IST on Sun, 2 May 2021. The play is available to both national and international audiences on www.insider.in.
