Event Description

Led by the great off spinner Erapalli Prasanna, the newly-renamed Karnataka state first won the Ranji Trophy in 1973-74. They ended Mumbai’s 15-year reign and then beat Rajasthan in the final. It began a redistribution of power in Indian cricket. Soon six Karnataka players from that final were in a touring Indian squad. Here, discussing the event are Ramachandra Guha, Suresh Menon and Sharda Ugra with Prasanna and the baby of that victorious team, Sanjay Desai. They recall the event, its impact on Indian cricket and the many stories behind the story. Speakers Erapalli Prasanna Former Indian Cricket Player The greatest off spinner of his time, and one of the finest to have played the game, Erapalli Prasanna claimed 371 wickets in the Ranji Trophy and 189 in 49 Tests for India. He was the seniormost member of India’s legendary spin quartet – Bishan Bedi, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkatraghavan were the others – that ensured victories for India in the years when these were not so common. He led Karnataka to the Ranji title twice. Sanjay Desai Former Karnataka Batsman An opening batter who, with Roger Binny once held the national record of 451 runs for the first wicket. He was a brilliant fielder at short leg, often compared to Eknath Solkar, and also kept wickets for Karnataka. He was in the second title-winning team too. After his playing days he served as President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. Suresh Menon Columnist & Author Columnist and author, Menon has reported on cricket for over four decades. He has written a biography of Bishan Bedi. His most recent book, Why Don’t You Write Something I Might Read? is a collection of his essays on books and literature. Sharda Ugra Sports Journalist Sharda Ugra spent more than three decades in sports journalism, working with Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day, national daily The Hindu, India Today magazine and ESPNcricinfo and ESPN India. She speaks and writes about issues around Indian sport in conferences and publications, academic and popular, in India and overseas. She worked with former New Zealand captain John Wright and Yuvraj Singh on their memoirs, was a fellow of the Australia India Institute, University of Melbourne in 2013 and currently is a columnist with Hindustan Times and BBC – Hindi website and contributes for The Voice of Fashion, the Wisden Almanack, Mojo Story, Al-Jazeera, Frontline magazine, the India Forum, The Telegraph, Kolkata and other publications. Having left the formal workforce, she believes she is just getting started. Ramachandra Guha Author & Historian Ramachandra Guha’s books include a pioneering social history of sport, a landmark history of independent India, and an authoritative two-volume biography of Mahatma Gandhi, both volumes of which were chosen by the New York Times as a Notable Book of the Year. His awards include the Leopold-Hidy Prize of the American Society of Environmental History, the Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Fukuoka Prize for contributions to Asian culture. He is the recipient of an honorary doctorate in the humanities from Yale University. He lives in Bengaluru.
