Event Description

When: Sunday, 31st October 2021- 5:30 PM

As part of the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival 2021, four young rappers will take the stage on Sunday, the 31st of October at 5.30 PM. These vibrant artists, with their clever lyrics and catchy beats, provide food for thought and reflection while charming you with foot-tappingly infectious music.

Conscious rap is a sub-genre that is becoming increasingly popular. The youth are interested in the world, they want to be engaged, and they are drawn towards music that reflects this world honestly. Kannada rap, which has been around for about a decade now, effortlessly marries Kannada lyrics to lively rhythms. Avoiding the colloquial, instead choosing to pen lyrics reminiscent of Kannada literature, they make sure to stir the spectator from within.

Karthik Sundar Gubbi, who goes by the stage name ‘Gubbi’, specializes in lyrics that weave multiple languages together and works with various kinds of music – just as comfortably collaborating with Carnatic artists as drawing inspiration from Eminem and J.Cole.

Aditya Parashar, or ‘A.V.P’, is a versatile rapper and actor who seamlessly jumps from humorous raps to commentaries on women’s empowerment and mental health.

Madhura Gowda, whose stage name is ‘EmmJee’, situates her music between pop and hip-hop, and has also made music for movies and webseries.

‘Putti Raps’, a.k.a. Anushree Acharya, only 19 years old tries to overturn the negative image that rap sometimes gets by creating relevant and relatable content and presenting a new perspective.

This form of art, this act is an invitation, a bridging of a gap between old and young, fun and reflective. The rappers will improvise on stage, bouncing energy and ideas off each other, perhaps creating an explosive moment that captures the essence of ‘staying alive’.
