From exploitative contracts to outright idea theft, today’s economy is rife with pitfalls for independent creators. Based on the book Who Owns What?, this discussion offers a basic understanding of the world around IP Law, translating legalese into simple and straightforward concepts.

Musicians, writers, filmmakers and other content creators often lack the knowledge and resources to protect their work effectively. Intellectual property lawyers can be prohibitively expensive, and independent creators are often up against massive corporations with teams of legal experts-leading to the signing of highly one-sided contracts. This session aims to empower independent creators to advocate for themselves with confidence and clarity.

Xerxes Ranina
Author & Partner, Neolegal Associates
Xerxes Ranina’s practice spans corporate law, IP, and entertainment law, advising foreign companies entering India and Indian companies expanding globally on joint ventures, mergers, and corporate litigation. His IP practice covers trademark, copyright, and patent prosecution, including IP due diligence and anti-piracy litigation, and he represents international entertainment clients, including major Hollywood studios, on copyright licensing, production agreements, and image rights. He obtained a landmark High Court of Karnataka order permitting witness examination via audio-visual link during a Mysore copyright trial, with witnesses examined live from Los Angeles, setting a precedent for speedy trials in India. He speaks regularly in India and abroad and conducts sessions for the Indian Higher Judiciary. He recently authored the book Who Owns What?, simplifying legal concepts for creators across the arts.

Vishruti Bindal is a Music Supervisor, Creative Producer, and Arts Policy Consultant based in Bangalore with a decade of experience in music curation, project management, and events. She supervises music for original Netflix and Amazon productions in India and is the co-founder of Linear Festivals, currently co-producing the second edition of linearಬೆಂಗಳೂರು (linear bangalore), city’s first 24-hour performing arts festival. Previously, she led global conferences and education programmes on music and cultural policy as the Head of Projects at Sound Diplomacy. In 2023, Vishruti also co-founded Neon Culture and the Deccan Alternative Music Conference in India, a travelling conference and showcase festival that focussed on developing the music ecosystem in South India.
