Event Description

Realism literally means painting ‘as is’ without artificiality and speculation, especially when it comes to exploring and capturing life in all its beauty and complexity. The artists undergo extensive training to perfect their skills, studying about anatomy, effects of distance, light and shadow, colour and movement. Realism Art is a thriving and growing movement of the 21st century in the West. However, in Indian context, realism is restricted to limited techniques. The Indian audience is unaware of the fundamentals of a visual language which requires rigorous drawing and painting curriculum, based on the methods used for hundreds of years and taught by masters.

Realism Revisited’ is an exhibition of paintings by 2 accomplished artists - Amit Srivastava & Duhita Samaiyar. Duhita Samaiyar has studied art at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art, Italy for 3 years and has been recognized on international forums such as the Art Renewal Centre in collaboration with Sotheby’s, the International Guild of Realism, Fine Art Connoisseur and American Art Collector Magazines. Amit Srivastava is an IITian who left his IT career to pursue his passion. He studied under master painter Anthony Ryder in the USA. His works have been selected at some of the most prestigious Art Competitions, featuring amongst some of the best contemporary realists in the world.

“For the Realist painter the quest of beauty and truth comes from a careful observation of nature - it heightens visual perceptions, enhances and challenges levels of skill and expands imagination.“ - Duhita

“In my view 'Realism' is not just about drawing or painting what can be seen but also representing to the layman what they have missed.” - Amit

Artist Profile:

Duhita Samaiyar is an exemplary artist hailing from the wondrous city of Coorg. A reverence for nature has been an intrinsic part of her ethos. The culture of Coorg has had a significant impact on her. She is inspired by the issues that challenge us today and she deeply cares to express herself effectively to create a dialogue between the painting and the viewer. After a few years in the fashion industry and launching a brand of children’s wear stores in India, she moved around with her family between Dubai, Cairo and London. She began her art studies in 2015, graduating from The Florence Academy of Art, Italy. She sought a return to skill-based training based on the observation of nature, sound artistic principles and universal themes - these had all but disappeared from 20th century art schools. She works from life with charcoal and oils in her studio, now based in Coorg. Her artistic interests coincide with the emerging Contemporary Representational Art Movement. Her work has been recognized on international forums such as the Art Renewal Centre in collaboration with Sotheby’s, the International Guild of Realism, galleries in Italy & the US, Fine Art Connoisseur and American Art Collector Magazines. She seeks to use her knowledge to work with conviction as an artist and adapt her technique according to emotion, using her personal aesthetic as her internal compass.

Amit Srivastava(b. 1977) loves to paint and has been drawing portraits since the age of nine. An IIT-Delhi alumnus, quit his rewarding career in IT in pursuit of his long-standing passion for Arts. His artistic yearnings took him to The Ryder Studio (USA), where he studied under master painter Anthony Ryder, with the classical realistic style of painting and life drawing as the focal points of his learning. His works have been selected at some of the most prestigious National and International Art Competitions, featuring among some of the best contemporary realists in the world. His work is a synthesis of keen, careful observation and classical painting techniques; stemming from his belief that when you pay enough attention to something, it opens up to you. He likes to experiment with his style as he moves on to becoming more narrative in his artwork. Figurative works are his forte but he loves doing still life and landscapes as well. His works hang in private collections in India and the US. He currently works out of his studio in New Delhi.
