Event Description

The Supreme Court in “Supriyo @ Supriya Chakraborty & Anr. v. Union of India” has put a roadblock on the route to marriage equality with its split verdict. This conversation between Ammel Sharon and Arvind Narrain will contextualize and understand the rationale behind the Supreme Court’s decision, examining the arguments from both sides and the legal reasoning of the justices. We’ll explore the implications for LGBTQ+ rights and the broader societal attitudes towards marriage in India. Additionally, we’ll map out potential ways forward for the movement, focusing on legislative reforms, continued advocacy, and strategies to build broader support for marriage equality. Join us to critically examine this landmark case and chart a course for advancing LGBTQ+ rights and marriage equality in India.
