RUDIMENTAL — DIY Asalato Workshop
The asalato Or Kashaka is one of the most satisfying instruments you'll ever hold — small enough to fit in your palm, complex enough to keep you hooked for years.
A West African percussion instrument. Two balls. One string. Infinite rhythm. one in each hand.
In this hands-on workshop, you'll build one from scratch, learn the fundamentals of rhythm, and leave with something you made yourself.
No musical experience needed. Just your hands and two hours.
What happens in the session:
You'll assemble and finish your own asalato, guided by XENKAT — musician and sound educator
Siddharth Venkat, who works with tribal instruments from around the world and has spent over a decade teaching people to listen, play, and express through sound
Once it's built, you learn to play it — starting with the basics of rhythm, timing, and pattern. The session closes with everyone playing together in sync. That moment of collective rhythm, with instruments you built yourself, is something you won't forget.
